Laurence Maroney...it makes sense

Okay, it is time to Layoff Laurence Marony

That'rs right. let's back off a bit.

Now we have confirmation. There is a reason his year was a bit off. For those of you who questioned Maroney's heart on that vital play to make a down last year, we know the answer. According to a report in THE BOSTON GLOBE, Maroney had a broken bone in his shoulder.

Maroney's razzle dazzle style of his first year has been inconsistent at best. And, just when it seemed like he was on the cusp of something special, last year's season dawned on him like a lead brick.

Now, if you are like me, you are wondering if this guy will show the glitz that accompanied him when he was drafted out of college. Well, we will see. But, when you consider what he does for a living, that shoulder is vital to his success. For now, I suggest let's give the guy one more chance. See how he does in the preseason and first four games. With all the backs the Patriot's have - with pressure off - this guy just might come through.

Get Well Jerry Remy

Just want to send a shout out to Mr. Remy. Hope you get better, soon!

The fill-ins are doing a nice job....but it is still not quite the same without Boston's best.

Rest up...we need you for the stretch run.

David Ortiz

Ah, the next hot topic in Boston Sports is brewing....and it is none other than David Ortiz.

I am hearing all sorts of buzz about DO and why his skills have declined.

Now, before you start believing all sorts of strange and wild reasons why he was good and not so good, really, it is time to take a good glance at the reasons behind DO and why he just might be declining.

1. Age. David is getting up there. At his age, sometimes the skills begin to diminish quickly. We often forget that DH's have a few good years and then finish fast. Boston's had several of those over the years that burn out. Now, we have never had one as good as DO, which makes this seem scary.

2. Injuries. They have been catching up to DO. It happens to players from time to time. Before you know it, the snowball effect happens and the player isn't the same. We've seen it happen in Boston before with a similar injury. Remember Nomar??? Was going to be the second Ted Williams. A wrist injury later, he is traded out of here, nowhere close to his former self. Now, perhaps there are other reasons why this may have happened as well....but that wrist injury totally changed him and his hitting.

3. They know you. Think about it. For the first few seasons, DO was "the man." But, now the AL has gotten to know him so well. That's what happens when you become clutch. The AL has made adjustments. Many. And they've worked. DO really hasn't made as many as maybe he can or should.

So, when you add it all up, there is a logical reason why DO may not longer be the Big Papi we love. It doesn't mean he can't contribute....just don't expect him to be the Big Papi we have come to know and love. That one is gone. We are now witness the genesis of a new Papi....and, hopefully, the results will eventually get a bit better....but don't be surprised if they don't

Big Baby

Okay, gotta take a few minutes to comment on Big Baby.

First, kudos on a great second year. The Babe - okay the Babe Jr. - has been great. He followed a nice first year with an excellent second year and hopefully will be resigned next year. His playoffs have been wonderful as well. It is nice to see him jack up his game a notch.

Now, I have to admit that some people have gone Baby CRAZY. Literally. I have read and heard in several places that signing the babester is THE Celtics priority this offseason. I agree.

However, some people have lost their senses. I have heard people say that the Celts may have to unload the coffers for this guy. His game is so good, and he is so young, there are people actually hinting that he may command more than 5 million per year. Some have it in the 6 to 9 million range.

WHAT!
ARE YO KIDDING ME!

I love it when playoff fever grips the hub. It tends to do things like this. But, we have to learn from our history. Playoffs, and big seasons, don't necessarily mean anything. Sometimes, players have a good year because no one has the book on them yet.

Don't believe.

Well, think back to last year. James Posey. Great player. Would have been a great help this year. But, for a four year contract???? Uh, no. See what he did for New Orleans. Decent...but not worthy of the contract that his play earned last year.

Now, Posey is solid. But, think back to Tony Allen. A couple years back, he was averaging 20 pts per game in these parts. Think he is worth the big bucks.

Or, go way back in time. Think of the year the Celtics had when Larry was out for the season injured. They got great production for a year from a CBA player. He had a decent career and often led the team ins coring...but, people could have totally blown his year out of proportion. couple years later, he was out of the league. Remember the name Kevin Gamble.

The Celts have a lot of these type of players. Decent guys, who come up big. Happens all the time.

So, before we annoint BB the next big thing, let's take a breath and think of who he is. A good player, who still has a ways to go before he is a sure thing.

Thank You Bruins

Today, I heard a variety of Post Mortems following the Boston Bruins seasons. Among many of the post mortems was a series of people who were let down. As one of the members of local sports radio commented, we expect championships....anything less just isn't good enough.

Hearing so many people down on the Bruins - disappointed even - was crazy. Sure, its a bummer that the Bruins are out, but COME ON PEOPLE. At the beginning of the season there were people who said they'd be happy, nay THRILLED, if the Bruins just got out of the first round. It hadn't been done here in so long.

And, you know what. THEY DID IT. They got out of the first round. And, not whimpering mind you. They obliterated Montreal.

Think back to past history. In the late 80s, the Bruins were able to finally get past Montreal in the playoffs, and lost the next series. It propelled them onto a run that led to two Stanley Cups visits. We are just beginning one of those such runs. The team is being run the right way, coached the right way, and has the best young talent since a few guys named Orr and Esposito were lacing up skates. Their point total this year was not a fluke.

True, they have some decisions to make. But, the Bruins are beginning to resemble the current Red Sox. Running their ship the right way.

The Bruins Have Arrived. Just wait until next year,
