Okay, gotta take a few minutes to comment on Big Baby.
First, kudos on a great second year. The Babe - okay the Babe Jr. - has been great. He followed a nice first year with an excellent second year and hopefully will be resigned next year. His playoffs have been wonderful as well. It is nice to see him jack up his game a notch.
Now, I have to admit that some people have gone Baby CRAZY. Literally. I have read and heard in several places that signing the babester is THE Celtics priority this offseason. I agree.
However, some people have lost their senses. I have heard people say that the Celts may have to unload the coffers for this guy. His game is so good, and he is so young, there are people actually hinting that he may command more than 5 million per year. Some have it in the 6 to 9 million range.
WHAT!
ARE YO KIDDING ME!
I love it when playoff fever grips the hub. It tends to do things like this. But, we have to learn from our history. Playoffs, and big seasons, don't necessarily mean anything. Sometimes, players have a good year because no one has the book on them yet.
Don't believe.
Well, think back to last year. James Posey. Great player. Would have been a great help this year. But, for a four year contract???? Uh, no. See what he did for New Orleans. Decent...but not worthy of the contract that his play earned last year.
Now, Posey is solid. But, think back to Tony Allen. A couple years back, he was averaging 20 pts per game in these parts. Think he is worth the big bucks.
Or, go way back in time. Think of the year the Celtics had when Larry was out for the season injured. They got great production for a year from a CBA player. He had a decent career and often led the team ins coring...but, people could have totally blown his year out of proportion. couple years later, he was out of the league. Remember the name Kevin Gamble.
The Celts have a lot of these type of players. Decent guys, who come up big. Happens all the time.
So, before we annoint BB the next big thing, let's take a breath and think of who he is. A good player, who still has a ways to go before he is a sure thing.
