There are strange noises developing from the coaching fraternity of Boston. As you may or may not have heard, Doc Rivers has somehow let it be known that he might leave the Celtics at the end of this year to spend more time with his family. As reported by Steve Bulpett in the Boston Herald yesterday and further reported by A Sherrod Blakeley of CSNNE news, Doc is starting to think about his future with the green.
What does this all mean? Well a few things.
First, this should come as no surprise. Doc has mentioned each year that, during the summer, he decides if he plans to coach again or nor. As you may recall, before the 2008 team was assembled, he had seriously (in his mind) contemplated not returning….and it is something that has often gone through his head. So, this should be no shocker.
However, what is surprising is the timing. The person responsible for this “leak” surely has bad timing….which is not always surprising in Boston sports. Remember the Celtics announced the hiring of Danny Ainge right before a playoff game. And, who can forget that Bill Parcells let it leak they he would leave the Pats right before the Super Bowl. We know what happened there. Not to say that these Celts are going anywhere – that is doubtful – but certainly the timing could not be worse.
Which leads to a final point. Is this Doc being Doc? Or has he had it with this collection of players who have seemed to tune him out. He preaches “DEFENSE” and what do we see….a total lack of it. This group is lackadaisical at best and a huge underachieving disappointment to be true. Doc might have seen enough of this crew and might know that his message can only go so far.
